Appelé initialement, Ile Notre-Dame, ce circuit sera rebaptisé circuit Gilles Villeneuve après la mort du pilote canadien.
Il est composé de longues lignes droites, d'une épingle et de chicanes lentes et intermédiaires. Les murets qui bordent la piste, parfois d'un peu trop près, ne sont pas sans rappeler certains parcours typiquement urbains.
La chicane Senna donne souvent lieu à des départs très mouvementés.
C'est un circuit qui sollicite beaucoup les freins et qui offre bien souvent des courses animées.
